Tuna company John West blamed for death of sharks in nets
Britain's best-selling brand of tinned tuna is responsible for killing thousands of rare sharks and turtles every year, a new report claims.
Although most tinned tuna is advertised as "dolphin-friendly", many other creatures are still being caught in huge nets.
And John West is bottom of an environmentally friendly league table, according to a Greenpeace study out today.
It says the fish-aggregation devices (FADs) used to attract tuna also attract other species, including some of the most endangered turtles and sharks. Sainsbury's tuna is the only brand fished using solely sustainable methods.
Greenpeace's David Ritter said: "If the fishing industry is going to be truly sustainable, they must support the introduction of large-scale marine reserves."
Tuna stocks have dwindled so much due to over-fishing in recent years that the industry is already on the brink of collapse.
A John West spokesman said last night: "We take our responsibility to the marine environment extremely seriously. Our selection procedure in appointing suppliers is very rigorous."
BEST.. AND THE WORST
1 SAINSBURY'S: Their own-brand is the only one that is entirely fished using sustainable methods
2 CO-OP: Around 50 per cent of the Co-op's tinned tuna is caught using pole and line.
3 MARKS & SPENCER: Good seafood procurement policy, but use some fishing boats with FADs.
4 ASDA: Show awareness of the problems, but tins fail to say how the fish was caught.
5 MORRISONS: Some awareness, but a great deal of their tuna comes from fishing boats using FADs.
6 TESCO: Majority of Tesco tuna comes from boats that have no restrictions on using FADs.
7 PRINCES: No restrictions on FADs and tins don't say how the fish was caught.
8 JOHN WEST: Never tells consumers how tuna was caught, no restrictions on FADs, no support for reserves and uses tuna from threatened stocks.

Le requin Mako vient de faire son entree sur la liste des 10 especes les plus en danger.Il rejoint ainsi le rhinoceros noir, le panda, le tigre, le beluga, 2 especes de tortues, le perroquet a joues vertes, l'acajou a grandes feuilles, et la goldenseal (herbe traditionellement utilise par les amerindiens, on la trouve couramment dans des complements alimentaires).

In Hong Kong, shark fin soup can fetch almost US$100 for a single serving, and wholesale pricing for fins can range from a low of US$40 to more than US$550 per kilo. As with most shark species, Mako Sharks are particularly susceptible to overfishing because they have long life cycles, resulting in the species being fished twice as fast as they are able to produce. Mako Sharks mature in seven to twelve years and only then produce small litters of baby sharks in their lifetime.
According to the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) the top 10 most endangered species are:

Back In Scotland
Me voici revenue depuis vendredi soir du cote est de l'atlantique....le retour a la realite n'est pas facile et je n'ai qu'une envie : repartir et vite !
le vol de retour ne s'est pas passe tout a fait comme prevu .....
Sachant que je devais partir a 17h de JFK avec Delta Airlines , la photo ci-dessous vous offre un debut de reponse !
End of holidays, I am back in Scotland since friday evening after a non smooth flight. I was supposed to leave NYC at 5 pm traveling with Delta Airline but actually there was some last minutes troubles with my reservation and I finally happen to take a Air France flight 5 hours after.....it was kind of a tense time and I started to be relieved only when sitting on the plane ! Due to this change I have missed my connection in Paris and have to wait 6 hours for the next flight to Aberdeen...Nice :-(
Ce "leger" changement m'a valut 6 heures d'attente a Charles de Gaulle et une arrivee en soiree a Aberdeen.
Sitot arrivee ca a ete labo,pas de temps a perdre car dans 2 semaines je m'envole pour une semaine de genomique a Dubrovnick
This week end I was in the lab , no time to loose as I am going to Dubrovnick for a seminar at the end of the month !

Dernier reveil à NYC, dernieres heures pour profiter de la ville, a 13h je prendrais le metro pour JFK d'ou mon avion decolle à 17h. Ca passé trop vite !

Shark conservation victory on UK high-street
Shark conservationists have forced the UK largest chain of health food
stores to stop selling shark cartilage capsules. More than 3,000 supporters
of conservation group Bite-Back sent emails directly to Holland & Barrett's
head office calling for the company to stop selling shark cartilage in its
550 stores.
The shark cartilage being sold by Holland & Barrett was extracted from the
threatened spiny dogfish, according to Bite-Back. Priced at £16.99 for 100
capsules, shark cartilage products were marketed by the store as a natural
remedy for ailments including arthritis, joint problems and even cancer.
Businesses profiting from the shark fishing industry are effectively
endorsing an underwater genocide,' said Bite-Back campaign director Graham
Buckingham. 'This is a perfect example of how Bite-Back supporters can help
devalue a dead shark. We are grateful for Holland & Barrett's decision and
we're confident it will have knock-on effects throughout the retail industry.

Ca n'etonnera personne mais ........I Love New York !!!!
No surprise but....I Love New York !!!!
Je visite,me perd dans ses rues, laisse mes envies guider mes pas et force est de constater que mes communications chimiques ne m'avaient pas trompées.
Since friday evening I am going around, visiting, enjoying a little bit of a New York City way of life and I am feeling soooooooooooooo fine !
L'auberge est tres bien située dans l'Upper West avec Central Park a 5 min et une station de metro au bout de la rue.
The hostel is very nice , with a perfect locationin the Upper West. Central Park is at walking distance (5 min!) and there's a subway station across the street.
La cuisine / The kitschen
une grande piece commune / the common area
et meme un jardin ! / and a garden !
Elle acceuille maximum 50 personnes ce qui rend la communication et les rencontres plus faciles. D'ailleurs dans la salle commune il y a une fresque ou est inscrit "il n'y a pas d'etrangers ici , juste des amis qui ne se sont pas encore rencontrés..." . Il y a pas mal de voyageurs solo et le soir nous nous retrouvons pour cuisiner et diner a l'auberge avant de sortir. Hier c'etait sushi party !

In the common room there's "there are no strangers here...only friends who haven't met yet" painted on the wall .....everything is said ! Yesterday before going out we had a sushi party for dinner ........Yummy !

Au petit matin je me suis apercue que je n'avais pas profité du spectacle seule.....car cet animal etait endormi,blotti contre mon sac !!!!!
